SmartMarkdown exists because converting a document to Markdown shouldn't require a developer, a paid SaaS subscription, or a privacy compromise. We build free, browser-based tools for the professionals who live in Markdown workflows.
Our Mission
Markdown has become the default writing format for modern software teams, technical writers, and documentation professionals. But the tools for getting content into Markdown from other formats have historically been frustrating — low-quality output, privacy risks from file uploads, paywalled features, or crude conversion with no editing step.
SmartMarkdown's mission is to build the best-in-class conversion and editing tools for Markdown workflows, and to keep them free, private, and accessible to everyone. No subscription. No account. No data collection. Just tools that work.
We are building a complete suite of tools covering every common Markdown workflow: importing content from PDFs, Word, HTML, and structured data; exporting Markdown to other formats; editing and formatting Markdown; and generating structural elements like tables and tables of contents.

Every tool page is written or reviewed by a subject-matter expert. We test each claim against real documents before publishing.

We build tools that process files locally. We don't store documents, track file contents, or monetize your data.

Our content explains how things actually work, including limitations. We don't hide trade-offs behind marketing language.

Tool Development Philosophy
We believe the best tools are ones that get out of the way. The conversion should be fast, the output should be clean, and the editing experience should give you everything you need without overwhelming you with options you'll never use.
Every SmartMarkdown tool is built with three principles:
- Privacy by default. Processing happens in your browser. Files are not uploaded. We have no visibility into your documents.
- Accuracy over speed. We'd rather take an extra processing step to correctly detect a table structure than produce raw text faster. The output should be production-ready.
- The full workflow in one place. Convert, edit, preview, and download — all in one page. You shouldn't need to copy output into a separate editor.
